RE: Buying updates ...

Anyone who has managed software development has learned that it is cheaper to buy it than to build it. Programmers know that too, but most are willing to mess around and learn on their own (at your expense). However, all systems are imperfect and subject to crashes. With MS OS's, after you fight your way to help, the only advice you get is "reinstall Windows ...". User groups of unsupported OS's share their patches help each other out -- something you can't do with closed systems. Besides, Unices of all flavors including Linux are widely reported to be much more stable than all Windows. How's that for paradox. Those systems you can fix you don't need to, while those that need to be fixed can't be fixed -- and the market pays up to an infinite premium for the latter.
