Hi Peter and Valueman:

I beg to differ a little bit with Peter's last message. The
per survivor processing (PSP) technique discussed in
the VSAT research description need not involve signal
prcessing with multiple transmit or receive antennas.
PSP is a technique for simplifying maximum likelihood
searches by reducing the number of states in Viterbi
decoders (see the key paper by Raheli et al.in
IEEE Trans. Commun. in Feb 95). My guess is that
VSAT's cochannel interference reduction technique actually
deodulates all signals (desired and interferers)
at the same time, without attempting to reject any. PSP
can also be accomplished in the context of multiple
antennas, but the key concept remains the same.

One aspect of Peter's reply with which I agree completely
is that many companies have developed or are developing
CCI removal solutions, so VSAT's research will not give it
any particular edge. In fact one of my Dept colleagues has
started a company based on a CCI removal technology
which allows a frequency reuse of 1 (instead of 4 to 7)
for GSM cellular systems. The PSP technique investigated
by VSAT strikes me as being somewhat of a brute force
approach. Of course, I reserve the right to change this
opinion when I see details of the research project.
