TOKYO, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks fell by more than two percent to a fresh 12-year low in early afternoon trading on Thursday as a widely watched economic report underscored the gravity of Japan's economic malaise.

At one point the benchmark Nikkei index had fallen as low as 13,110.82 -- it's lowest since February 4, 1986. As of 0354 GMT, it had recovered slightly but was still down 259.11 points or 1.93 percent at 13,147.28. December futures were off 220 at 13,130.

''Chartwise, it looks like a dog,'' said a dealer at a foreign securities house. ''We're just looking for a bottom.''
