Turk Telekom Chooses Alcatel to Build US$35 Million National Internet Infrastructure in Turkey BusinessWire, Thursday, October 01, 1998 at 09:14 PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1998--Turkey's national telecommunications operator, Turk Telecom has chosen Alcatel to supply a US$35 million (210 million French Francs) nationwide infrastructure that will deliver reliable, high-speed and low-cost Internet access, plus value-added services for ISPs (Internet Service Providers), content owners and end users. The new network, known as TTNet, will give Turk Telecom one of the most modern Internet infrastructures in the world. The TTNet network will combine IP routing, Frame Relay and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switching, with the network core based around an ATM backbone, using Alcatel 1100 HSS(TM) switches, providing a scalable, high-speed, multi-service network, including international connections up to 3 x 34 Mbps. Turk Telecom Internet customers will have access to TTnet from 140 Internet Remote Access Nodes distributed all over Turkey. High-speed access to TTNet based on ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology - the result of extensive research & development programmes within Alcatel - will be available to users. ADSL enables the re-use of existing copper wires for high-speed Internet access. As in many countries around the world, the Internet is expected to grow rapidly in subscriber numbers in Turkey. Businesses will be able to take advantage of the Internet's capabilities - from strategic marketing to sales and from basic communication to collaborative working - while many new residential subscribers nationwide will enjoy straightforward, low-cost Internet access for entertainment, communication, health and education services. A world leader in telecommunications systems and equipment as well as related cables and components activities, Alcatel operates in over 130 countries. Alcatel provides complete solutions and services to operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers, ranging from backbone networks to user's terminals. For more information, visit the Alcatel web site at alcatel.com . Editor's Note The Alcatel 1100 HSS provides both native ATM and Frame Relay switching. It is the only switch of its kind being delivered today that has independent Frame Relay and ATM switching, with interworking between the two, offering unparalleled broadband networking options. The multiservice switch supports high-bandwidth backbone applications, such as LAN interconnection, circuit emulation, voice and video. RateMasterR, a patented, proactive traffic control system, provides maximum trunk utilization and optimized network performance.
