DD smile COMAIR Signs Agreement with Bombardier to Acquire 50 Jets Including New 70-Passenger Jet PR Newswire - October 01, 1998 09:50 Jump to first matched term CINCINNATI, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- COMAIR Inc., (Nasdaq: COMR), the operator of the largest fleet of regional jets in the world, today announced it has signed a 10-year agreement with Bombardier Aerospace of Canada to acquire 50 additional jets including 20 of the new 70-passenger jets and 30, 50-seat jets. The agreement for the firm order of 50 jets, including estimated escalation costs and related support equipment, is valued at more than $1 billion. All of these aircraft will be powered by General Electric engines. In addition to the firm order of 50 jets, the agreement includes options for 115 aircraft. Today, COMAIR, a Delta Connection Carrier, operates 67, 50-seat Canadair Jets as part of a previous firm order of 80 jets. The company will receive its 80th jet in August, 1999 and will continue to accept delivery of at least one aircraft each month beginning in September, 1999. COMAIR will receive its first 70-seat jet by the end of 2001. This new agreement, including options, could expand COMAIR's fleet to a total of 245 jet aircraft. Canadair Jets offer passengers a two-by-two seating configuration with no middle seats. This jet aircraft -- the quietest jet in the world -- can cruise at 530 mph and up to 41,000 feet. "As the pioneer of regional jets, this agreement solidifies COMAIR's position as the leading operator of regional jets in the world," said David A. Siebenburgen, President and Chief Executive Officer of COMAIR Inc. "This plan enables us to become an all-jet carrier in 2001 -- the first regional carrier in the U.S. with an all-jet fleet." COMAIR introduced regional jets to the traveling public when it launched the aircraft in the U.S. in 1993. COMAIR and Delta's hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is the only hub in the U.S. that gives passengers the opportunity to travel exclusively on jets to every city it serves. COMAIR continues to analyze 30- to 40-passenger jets, Mr. Siebenburgen said. "While today's announcement clearly enables us to expand our existing service, we are still very interested in jet aircraft that could suit some very specific needs," Mr. Siebenburgen said. Founded in 1977, COMAIR is the largest independently-owned regional airline in the U.S. and employs more than 4,000 aviation professionals. The company serves 80 cities in 28 states and three countries and with nearly 5,000 flights each week. Visit COMAIR's Web Site at www.comair.com for more information on COMAIR.
