Unilever sets up board to fight Y2K

By Alex Yong

KUALA LUMPUR: Recognising that its business partners should also be prepared to face and solve the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem, Unilever (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd will be setting
up a board to ensure that the bug would not disrupt its operations.

The board would be made up of directors in its consumer, technical, sales, foods, human resource and home and personal care department.

When announcing that the company had been checked to be Y2K compliant, Unilever (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd chairman and managing director Chim Howe Lai said he was,
however, wary of the fact that this alone was insufficient to be Y2K compliant.

"Our concern is now the external environment in which we operate," Chim said at the uk.today@klcc exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

"From now until mid-1999, the board shall identify our existing business partners that are Y2K compliant," he said.

"There are more opportunities for them to grow with us if they are free from the 'bug', otherwise, we have no choice but to substitute them," Chim warned.

He added that at the same time, contingency plans would be made to minimise its risk exposure to companies that were not Y2K compliant before mid-1999.

The company itself has spent RM6mil to ensure that all machinery, equipment and operating systems have been examined and tested by its internal IT department.

As for its business partners which number between 200 and 300, he said that in realistic terms, Unilever did not have the resources to help them.

"However, we can provide them with our methodology and experience," Chim said.

He revealed that Unilever was expected to launch an interactive marketing system by the first quarter of next year.
