RESEARCH ALERT - M. Stanley positive on
chip earns

NEW YORK, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley said a seasonal increase in
personal computer demand and the end of a correction in chip inventory
levels bode well for earnings in the sector this quarter.

-- In a research note, Morgan Stanley said its semiconductor analysts expect ''a meaningful contraction
in the number of negative earnings surprises for the quarter'' and cited Intel Corp. (INTC - news),
Xilinx Inc. (XLNX - news), NeoMagic Corp. (NMGC - news) and Rambus Inc. (RMBS - news) as its
favorites in the group.

-- The firm said Intel and NeoMagic ''should be able to report positive earnings surprises'' while
Rambus and Xilinx should ''meet or slightly exceed expectations.''

-- Morgan Stanley rates Intel, Xilinx and NeoMagic strong buy and Rambus as outperform.
