On a theoretical level, I might agree with some of your stated advantages of vertical integration, however, in practice, seldom have I experienced a vertically integrated organization that is able to maintain focus, response and excellence over many sub-product lines simultaneously.

They tend to be less market driven; they overextend a product like cycle; they are less innovative, lack capacity for un-forecasted demand.

Dell's approach is to focus on strong, responsive partnerships with sub-contractors like you outline in point (2) that enables them to lead the market in points (1) & (3).

This way, they do not suffer from the NIH factor and allows flexibility unequalled in vertically integrated operations.

Hello all.

Is the move to Direct Connect for DELL PC's and the implementation of the DELL/EXCITE website the next bold DELL move or the indication of a search for expansion outside a saturated PC market?

Comments and thoughts welcome?

PS Nice catch on post 2000
