Hilary Clinton 'in the dark' over Monica
By Hugh Davies in Washington

Ex-intern 'stalked Clinton adviser'

HILLARY Clinton was aware her husband was spending extra time with
Monica Lewinsky, but she told Sidney Blumenthal, a White House aide, that
the President was simply "ministering" to "a troubled young woman",
according to Republican leaks in Washington yesterday.

The story of Mr Clinton on his knees in the Oval Office, apparently praying
with Miss Lewinsky, is said to be in Mr Blumenthal's grand jury testimony that
is about to be released by the House Judiciary Committee.

It has already emerged that the former White House trainee viewed their
encounters as earning her "presidential knee-pads" by offering him oral sex.

Mr Blumenthal's account in being compared to Mrs Clinton's initial reaction to
reports of the affair in January. She said she was awakened in bed by her
husband who told her: "You're not going to believe this, but. . ." The reports
came "as a big surprise" to both of them. She said she loved her husband and
believed his denial of an affair. She spoke of "a firestorm" of lies in a
Right-wing conspiracy to destroy the presidency.

To some scepticism, friends of Mrs Clinton still insist that she only knew the
full truth about Miss Lewinsky's involvement with her husband just before he
confessed to the nation.

Mr Blumenthal is said to have asked Mrs Clinton about Miss Lewinsky after
hearing rumours of a presidential affair.

The aide told the jury that her response was to insist that her husband, a
Southern Baptist, was merely offering spiritual guidance to the confused
22-year-old from Beverly Hills.

Mr Blumenthal is said to have eventually confronted Mr Clinton, who
explained that the woman chased him and wanted sex so that other White
House workers could no longer accuse her of simply being a "stalker".
