From USAGOLD:

"There are a lot of stories doing the rounds about hedge fund caught short in gold," said Lawrence Eagles, Head of Commodity Research for GNI Ltd in this morning's FWN metals report. He went on to say that funds are being withdrawn from hedge funds and the funds may need to close positions. Added to this, Eagles said, there has been a certain return of gold's perceived safe-haven status.

Eagles also said that central banks are now holding gold dear, suggesting the banks "might wish to reserve bullion for times of crisis." We have heard rumors (which were reported here previously) that the mining companies have standing buy orders at the $301.50 level on the December contract.
