That's Safire's point. Actually, Netanyahu has made further land concessions in return for "crackdown" on terrorism. Starr could pull a October surprise in much the same way as Walsh did in 1992.

I guess the fiction about the Watergate impeachment hearings being non-partisan has been blown. The Democrats are upset since the Republicans want to use the Watergate standard of having the impeachment inquiry open to all corruption issues not just Jones deposition.

Safire's point is to air the deal forged from desperation so Clinton doesn't get any credit, other than for trying to cynically manipulate the election at the last moment.

The wreckage that Clinton's foreign policy (LACK OF) has wreaked on the world's financial markets should more than overwhelm any boost he plumbs out of such a deal. People will feel the hurt when they get their financial statements and they can only blame Clinton's failed leadership for "the world's worst financial conditions in 50 years"*. And Clinton will "feel the pain" when they vote accordingly.

*according to Robert Rubin, today.

btw, the Commander-in-Chief spent many many millions to take out a Sudanese pharmaceutical plant in his effort to save his failed Presidency. He won't allow the world an investigation despite having been shown wrong on each revised account they have given.

Now it looks like he's taking us to war again.

Wag the Dog.
