Wrestling puts baseball, football in TV choke hold

LOS ANGELES (BPI) _ If football and baseball are having trouble getting kids to the ballparks, they are apparently having even more trouble getting them to watch those sports on TV.

While fewer than 900,000 teenage boys ages 12 to 17 were watching ABC's ''Monday Night Football'' or ESPN's simultaneous coverage of the National League's wild-card playoff game Sept. 28, nearly 1.5 million teenage boys were watching professional wrestling on USA Network and TNT, according to Nielsen Media Research data provided by USA Network.

USA's two-hour block of wrestling from 9-11 p.m. Monday, made up of ''WWF Raw'' and ''WWF War Zone,'' was the most-viewed program in that demographic Monday night with a net 966,000 males ages 12 to 17.

''Monday Night Raw,'' TNT's three-hour block of WCW wrestling, drew 503,000 teenage males from 8-11 p.m.

Far behind USA in second place was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Detroit Lions Monday night NFL game from 8:15-11 p.m., with 683,000. ESPN's coverage of the Chicago Cubs-San Francisco Giants baseball wild card game drew just 196,000 boys, which ranked nearly at the bottom in that demographic overall for the night.

By comparison, the highest-rated nonsports program for teenage boys on Monday night was ''Everybody Loves Raymond'' from 9-9:30 p.m., with 363,000 boys ages 12 to 17.
