Great article, I specially like this part about IBM and Seagate.

At Veeco Instruments Inc., "our hard-disk drive business is much stronger [now] than our semiconductor business," declared Debra Wasser, director of investor relations for the Plainview, N.Y., company. Veeco gets half of its revenues from the mass-storage business and one-quarter from the semiconductor industry.

The fastest growth is coming in metrology equipment, which is projected to gain 25%-30% and represent two-thirds of the company's sales this year. Most of that gain is coming from sales to some of the largest suppliers of data storage equipment: IBM Corp. and Seagate Technology Inc., for example, where its metrology gear is now being used to turn out next-generation magnetoresistive heads. "Diversification has helped us during this downturn," Wasser noted.
