Just the same as they planned. If the SGS design isn't ready, push the launch off 6 months. This BSkyB box isn't the same as the PACE World Box. I'd still like to see that one.......................

SGS-Thomson, BSkyB To Produce Digital Boxes
Semiconductor Business News
SGS-Thomson Microelectronics, St. Genis, France, and British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) today said they are collaborating to create a development environment that will support mass production of commercial set- top television boxes for BSkyB's digital satellite TV service in Spring 1998.

Under the partnership, SGS-Thomson is working with BSkyB to create hardware and software reference platforms for development of digital set-top boxes. These reference designs are intended to help set-top box manufacturers reduce the time it take to introduce systems on the market.

Four set-top box makers are already using the reference design platforms for systems, according to BSkyB.

SGS-Thomson said it is supplying chips for all of the major functions in the set-top box platforms, including a 32-bit microcontroller (ST20-TP2 and TP3), MPEG-2 decoder (STi3520L), PAL/NTSC encoder (STV0119), link/tuner interface (STV0199), front panel microcontroller (ST7) and support for NDS conditional access technology. In addition, these reference designs will use SGS-Thomson memory components, including serial EEPROMs and flash memories.

The software for the reference design is also being developed by SGS-Thomson, in co-operation with OpenTV Inc. The chip company also said it intends to use the same reference platform as the basis for its own Digital Terrestrial Decoder reference design. This will help achieve interoperability between digital satellite and digital terrestrial platforms, according to SGS- Thomson.
