Could be.

In that area the Rio Grande is about 30 feet wide and knee deep. In Taos it is barely below grade. A few miles North of Taos is a high plain surrounded by mountains. 30 miles across. Flat as a pool table. Has a flat bridge and if you stand on that bridge the Rio Grande is wwaaayyyy down there.
