Japan Telecom Chooses ITXC Corp to Enter the IP Telephony Industry October 2, 1998 PRINCETON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- Operator of Largest Internet Telephony Footprint Adds Second Major Carrier in One Month to Its IP Telephony Network ITXC Corp, the exchange carrier of the Internet telephony industry, proudly announced today that it was chosen by Japan Telecom, a major Japanese domestic and international Type I Carrier, to terminate its originating IP telephony calls. Japan Telecom becomes the newest addition to the ITXC network and joins Bell Atlantic as the second major telephone company to join the network in 30 days. ITXC's network is now the largest wholesale IP network of affiliates with termination in over 50 sites worldwide. The company adds 5-10 additional locations monthly. Yutaka Nakano, Director of Network Solutions Department, Japan Telecom Co., Ltd. commented that, "For a telecom carrier like us, who wants to quickly start the Internet telephony business, ITXC is a powerful and trustful partner. In Japan, I plan to offer Internet telephony services by using their high quality service, WWeXchange." "Japan Telecom is a fine example of a traditional carrier moving quickly to give their customers the benefits of Internet telephony. ITXC is delighted to provide them with a worldwide footprint for termination with the predictable quality Japan Telecom needs for its customers," said Tom Evslin, CEO and Chairman of ITXC Corp. "This is a real feather in ITXC's cap. It allows Japan Telecom to get into the Internet telephony business without having to build it first. This is another vote of confidence that Internet telephony is here to stay and not just a fad, and that ITXC is a key player in this emerging area of communications, " said Jeffrey Kagan, well-known industry analyst and CEO of Kagan Telecom Associates. "They used to say 'build it and they will come'. Now its even easier...just sell it and they will come." How It Works Internet callers served by ITXC affiliates around the world place their calls on standard telephones. These calls are routed by major carriers, like Japan Telecom, prepaid calling card companies, call-back companies, and other resellers to special computers called "gateways" which convert the calls from circuit-switched form to IP (Internet protocol). The gateway operator then hands the calls to ITXC for destination delivery. ITXC's WWeXchange(SM) Service will route Japan Telecom's calls over the Internet or a private data network for termination on other companies' gateways (such as Bell Atlantic's). Terminating gateways then translate the calls back into traditional voice format and complete them over the local telephone network. Japan Telecom, as an affiliate in the ITXC WWeXchange Service, is charged a wholesale price for originating the call and the terminating company is paid by ITXC for completing the call. From the standpoint of a company like Japan Telecom that originates these calls, ITXC enables them to terminate calls worldwide without having to make individual agreements with each terminating organization. From the standpoint of a call terminator, ITXC brings them worldwide traffic without the need to negotiate bi-lateral arrangements or check the credit of each company originating calls.
