Patrick, I used to do consulting work for various tribes on the coast, and I know what gives with these folks. I suspect (although I don't know this for a fact) that this hunt is being funded through the BIA, and is just another boondoggle. The entire issue is stinks! The harpoons are ceremonial, and the killing will be done with automatic weapons. That is a fact!

Historically, the Makah tribe never hunted the Grey whale in their entire history, and they chose that species precisely because it did come off of the endangered species list. I do have a problem with Native Americans, or any other group for that matter, asserting aboriginal rights and customs in contravention to common sense. I think its high time that all peoples are forced to accept the 20th century. Could you just see the Spanish reconstituting the Inquisition, or the English, French and Germans reconstituting the crusades?

TTFN,
CTC
