Let me tell you a story I told on the Yahoo thread. My wife and I have a little grand-nephew who was born on April 11, 1996. The next day Yahoo came public (at 14 then as I remember) and we thought we'd buy 100 shares in the open market in his name that day at 29 for his college fund...double the IPO price.

During 1997 I would use the example of these 100 shares to show the importance of buying and holding a stock with Yahoo's potential, and I got all kinds of flack. I said I hoped the stock would put him through Stanford.

Well, now he's turning 2 1/2...half-way to kindergarten age, and 15 years away from college. Even costing double the IPO price and weathering many big sell-offs, plus today's big sell-off, those shares are worth more than $33,000.
