Recent mention of the Jewish holidays on the threads indirectly reminded me of the 11th Armored Division, in which my father served.

In May of 1945, the division captured 2 historic locations in Austria, Berchtesgaden, with its infamous mountaintop "Wolf's Lair", and the Mauthausen extermination "slagel", the small Austrian subsidiary of the great Holocaust. After the capitulation on May 8, requests came in from all over Third Army's areas for tours of "Hitler's house". The deal was simple and, IMO, very wise: You got a tour of Berchtesgaden AFTER a short walk through Mauthausen. It's true that the most cold-eyed, battle hardened vets sat down on the road leading out of Mauthausen shaken, crying, and unable to move on. The Berchtesgaden tour wasn't much fun after that-for those few who even bothered.

I've taken issue a number of times with some of the opinions of many of the "depression" generation regarding economics and politics. But I give them credit for a much superior vision than the rest of us when it comes to sorting out and distinguishing between "manifestations of life".
