David; Maybe so, but their operation was of such a nature that
half the big banks didn't know what the heck was going on,
if they gained a lot of money in the way you said, they will
spend the rest of their life looking over their shoulder,
that's just the way it works.
I'm an old bird and can't say that such kind of shenanigans have
never crossed my mind or tempted me, but I had the good fortune
of seeing several people make large illicit gains, and came
to see they also built a sort of self made prison, they are
never really trusted again, and become "fair meat" for any
other vulture on earth.
The life style they wind up with is not as cozy as they
thought the money could buy.
Surly Nobel prize winners could see the ramifications of
pulling a stunt like that ? maybe not.
