~~~~~~~~~~~~OT~~~~~~~~~~~~~, Whales and Hawaiians :o)
nihil, I still haven't figured out how I feel about the whale issue.
I do know how I feel about Hawaiians. If the TV show I saw on PBS about the queen and how Hawaii became a state was true, I think Hawaiians have real claim to becoming a state illegally.
I would think it could be challenged and won in court. However, the population of Hawaii isn't what it was at the turn of the century. It would be very difficult to get the many segments to get behind a court challenge.
The US military may not get behind such a challenge either. :o)
I do think the Native Hawaiians have a real claim though.
Aloha!
** OT **
Nihil, we are all of us descended from aboriginal peoples. To use this as an excuse to revert to barbaric practices is backhanded racism. There is no reason why any ethnic group needs to hunt whales. None! Claiming special privileges for them is akin to making allowances for a child. It is pernicious paternalistic crap.
Aborignal Europeans also hunted whales. Do you think that they should reestablish that tradition?
Some aboriginal tribes practiced cannibalism. Maybe we should reinstitute that quaint custom. I think Jonathan Swift already dealt with that in his A Modest Proposal
Secondly, Native Americans are not native to America, they came here from Asia. And they came to Asia from Africa, as did we all.
Finally, it is difficult to justify this as a cultural reawakening when they plan to use .30 caliber automatic weapons for the hunt. By the way, this little cultural exercise was funded by the US Department of Commerce to the tune of $310,000 not including the Coast Guard to keep Makahs safe during their outing. Our tax dollars at work.
And then you claim For white Americans to define the rights of Native Americans to satisfy their own needs, especially newly discovered environmental needs, smacks of more than hypocrisy -- it smells of theft.
So what do you think, environmental legislation ought to be applied only to people of European descent?
Let's destroy the planet, it's our aboriginal birthright.
