GV, again, some very good points.

I've been following Hiram's posts for a while, and examined the company products from a distance. I can't say with any certainty how they will fair in the race to become the holy grail, but they are a contender.

As the new uses of optical networking components become evident and popular in the local markets, metro areas, I think that we will see new standards efforts emerging to normalize the market place, and it will be important for any contender to be in the thick of those standards development processes if they hope to stand a chance.

CSCO personifies this principle, as do others in networking, as did others before them.

Suffice it to say, in a general sense, that no vendor will make it in a vacuum if they are using proprietary solutions for very long, it's just too awkward and risky of a decision process for network managers to make. They need warm fuzzies.
