Metro One Telecommunications Contract With Sprint PCS Expands to Include 19 New Cities
PR Newswire - October 02, 1998 09:19

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Metro One Telecommunications, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTON), a leading provider of Enhanced Directory Assistance(R) (EDA) to the telecommunications industry, today announced that it has expanded its multi-year agreement with Sprint PCS, increasing the potential subscriber base served by Metro One. Major cities included in the new market areas are Atlanta, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Greensboro, Houston, Jacksonville, Knoxville, Las Vegas, Memphis, Norfolk, Orlando, Raleigh, Richmond, Tallahassee, and Tampa.

Metro One's service to Sprint PCS customers began in November 1996 and has been a significant contributor to Metro One's very rapid revenue growth in the last year. At the time of the initial contract, Sprint PCS held licenses to serve a population of approximately 190 million people in the U.S. Since that time, Sprint PCS has launched service in most of its markets and, through Sprint Corporation's acquisition of additional licenses in the Federal Communications Commission D and E block auctions, has increased its license coverage to approximately 270 million people. Metro One will be providing its EDA service to that expanded population under the contract expansion announced today.

"Our relationship with Sprint PCS is important to us," said Timothy A. Timmins, president and CEO of Metro One, "and we are pleased to have the opportunity to provide our EDA service to their customer base. The concept of Enhanced Directory Assistance fits well with Sprint PCS' provision of top-quality, feature-rich, all-digital, nationwide PCS service to their subscribers. Sprint has been very successful in rolling out its service across the country in the last two years, and we look forward to further contributions to their growth."

"Metro One's local service, efficient operations and focus on customer service have created a very successful relationship in the last two years," said Faerie Kizzire, senior vice president/customer care for Sprint PCS. "As we continue to expand our service base, Metro One's EDA will continue to be one of the ways we differentiate our service."

Sprint PCS has the largest 100 percent digital, 100 percent personal communications service (PCS) nationwide wireless network in the United States, already serving 159 metropolitan markets which include over 4,000 cities and communities across the country. Sprint PCS, together with its affiliates and Sprint Corporation, has licensed PCS coverage of nearly 20 million people in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sprint PCS is a partnership of Sprint Corporation, Telecommunications Inc. (TCI), Cox Communications, Inc. and Comcast Corporation. magnet overhead at upper 9, then upper 10s then 12. The overhead at upper 9 and upper 10 is trendlines which were gapped over in late June on the way down. Will be interesting to see if they are stronger or weaker because of it.
