Intel's troubles with Xeon...

from realworldtech.com
News for 9/30/98

Industry Directions

According to PC Week (Sept 28 issue), Intel has admitted problems in rolling out their Xeon
processor line. Intel has suggested that unsold Xeon chips be returned from OEMs so they can
be upgraded to a new stepping level which fixes problems with four-way processing, as well
as correcting glitches with 450NX chipset communication. This has apparently caused some
problems for OEMs trying to fill orders for their high-end servers.

The bad news, however, is that Intel has admitted that most NT applications will not take
advantage of the 1MB and 2MB cache that they intend to put on the chip, and have also
admitted that the 450MHz Xeon will not provide any performance gain over the 400MHz with
typical workstation apps.

Isn't the Xeon supposed to be Intels big margin baby?
Too bad they had to rush it to market without fully testing it...
