Mark, you said >As you probably know, there are 2 incompatible TV systems. A video tape made here can't be viewed on a European TV.<

Yes, it's a major hassle. I took NTSC 8mm videos when German relatives
visited here. Then I had to find a place to convert them to the
European PAL system. Costs about $30 per 2-hour tape. But the quality
is not quite satisfactory.

If DVD can make the conversion it would be of interest to me, if I
can figure out how to get the signal from 8mm tape to DVD.

I'm also about to put my mitts on new a notebook.

The lead times are disgusting. WHY does it take two weeks to assemble a system??????

DVD -- right now it's a tossup. I think by the time DVD becomes a significant distribution vehicle you'll have to upgrade your notebook anyway. On the other hand, if you're big on watching movies on the go then DVD is worth the extra $100 - $150.

Slick interactive manuals will be few and far between. I've produced a couple of interactive manuals, and VERY FEW software companies are willing to shell out the $15,000 to $40,000 required to do a good one. Just take a look at how little effort typical software companies put into even the online help systems. Software buyers just dont demand it. (rightly so)

Only DIVX players can play DIVX disks.

I don't know if all DVDs support both NTSC and PAL off the top of my head.

Buy both Dragon and L&H -- L&H VX+ is only around $50.

God bless,
PX
