Alex, Melinda,

How about Nadir rather than Alta? Just a thought.

Of course Mexico already had it at one time. That would be fine with me.

PENNI GOES TO THE HOSPITAL

THe reason I've been absent a couple of days is because I had to have minor surgery yesterday and I've been being dramatic about it. It was just "female stuff" but it did involve general anesthetic. And that's why I'm telling you, you being medical and all.
I had to be there an hour after the market opened so I already knew it was going to be a big down day and since I own a bunch of puts, I was terrified I'd miss a good sell point. X the Unknown offered to call if something really extreme happened, but the doctor refused to let the anesthesiologist wake me up if my cell phone went off during the surgery. So I pouted and traipsed into the changing room and put on that horrible backwards gown and a really shoddy blue robe (size XL)and brown socks with traction on the bottom that didn't even match. ANd ohmigod-a net on my hair. Then they put me in this little room to wait. In the corner was a TV. I slid over to it and started trying to find CNBC. Lonnie, the male nurse, came in and said, "What are you doing? That was Days of our Lives!!"

I said pitifully, "I wanted to change the channel."

""Well, what soap do you want?" he said, sighing.

"The one with Joe and Maria,' I muttered. "Channel 42."

He switched to CNBC and looked at me. "You want THIS?"

"Shhhh-!!!" I hissed. "Rene's getting ready to tell us about the Naz!"

A man came in and sat down. "I'm Dr. O'Connor. I'll be administering your anesthesia. DO you have any questions?"

"Do you own any Internet stocks? They're getting killed." I pointed at the TV. "Look at that! The market's only been open two hours and it's down 150 points!"

Lonnie gave the doctor a look; he thought I didn't notice, but I saw it. "I hope you know where your retirement funds are!" I said, a tad nastily.

Jay walked in. "Are you ready? Lonnie will walk you to the OR and Dr. O'Connor will give you the IV right there and when you wake up, it will all be over." He patted me on my knee.

"How long will this take?" I said, tearing my eyes away from Ron Insana, who worried me; he sounded very hoarse. I hoped he was all right.

"A couple of hours and you can go home."

I nodded. The DOW was turning up a bit. "Good. I might make it home in time for the close."

Jay looked at the TV and at me. "Penni, I really don't advise making any serious decisions today."

We walked to the OR. THey stuck a needle in my wrist. "Im really nervous." I said. Betty Jean, the OR nurse, took my hand comfortingly. "Now you know we're going to take good care of you,"
she smiled down at me.

I rolled my eyes. "No no no. It's my puts. I know X the Unknown is watching them for me, but what can she do it it really goes South?"

Jay said, "Bill? What are you giving her?"

"Nothing yet!" Dr, O'Connor said defensively.

"Well, maybe you'd better go ahead. Penni, you'll fall asleep now. And lots of people say they have wonderful dreams with this stuff."

"Will Nicholas Cage be there?" I said hopefully as I drifted away.

.........

"Penni--penni!! Wake up now! Did you have nice dreams?"

I opened my eyes. Betty Jean was leaning over me.
Wonderful dreams. What a gyp. I had seen candlestick charts marching across the room like the broomsticks in The Sorcerer's Apprentice growing bigger and smaller, forming harami and doji and shooting stars and dark cloud covers. Nicholas Cage was nowhere around.

Lonnie came over. "175!" he said proudly.

"Huh?" I tried to focus on him. He had said it so-meaningfully.

"That number on the bottom of the screen. The one you were so worried about. I checked it for you just now. It said -175."

"I'm ready to go home." I started to sit up. "I need a phone. Get me a computer."

I got home at 2;15. I groggily logged on and sold my CSCO puts and made 1500!!!! Then I went to bed.

They already own it. There was an Iranian entrepreneur here, had problems with his Cambodian and Vietnamese workers because they insisted on speaking in their native tongues. So he gathered them all together and said: "This is California! Speak Spanish!"
