whipsaw, Everybody knows enterprise software is a mess right now. But it is not cyclical. It is not a mature industry... come on, youve got to be kidding! The 3 factors affecting enterprise software (whcih btw includes the scm players) are: y2k, saturation in mkt, lack of skilled (affordable) personnel. After y2k things will pick up, but thats hardly a business cycle phenomenon.

Whipsaw, I disagree with your use of the ERP sector or PSFT as a bellwether for hardware. The entire ERP sector has been killed lately, but growth is still very healthy by anyone's standards. Certainly well in excess of anticipated growth for the computer sector. My guess is that there are concerns for decreased growth (but healthy growth nevertheless) centering around combination of y2k budgetary shifts and a decision to slowdown these very expensive and lengthy software conversions (multiyear contracts) because of softening business prospects in general.

I find that your comment is peculiar because just last week Dell upped its estimates for industry growth to 17%.

Enterprises will be investing in more technology, not less. I predict that Dell will continue to increase marketshare and equity investors will need to bet on the companies like Dell that will deliver during a downturn, should it ever happen. If it doesn't happen, Dell will skyrocket...either way, the risk is manageable and the upside is awesome. Picked up more @ 59 today.
