John, I see the possibility of Lucent buying someone other Ascend as very small. It would only happen if Mory purposely wanted to sabotage the takeover, perhaps by asking for an outrageous price. Based on his public comments, I don't see this happening. I can think and talk about all kinds of disaster to befall Lucent as they try to take on Cisco. It would be like going into WWII armed with a bow and arrow. Lucent is very good at what they do--voice switches, but these are weapons of the past. But it seems your question is about Ascend, not Lucent. I see lots of uncertainty in the future as an independent company. It's likely that they can continue to grow and become a tier-1 datacom equipment provider. But it's also equally likely IMO that they will stumble and fall into the Cisco meatgrinder that is pursuing them from behind. I can't really make any predicitons. bucky89
