While I beg to differ that things are going downhill at SI, I agree with the phenomenon you've identified. Building a high-traffic 24x7 service on the internet is an extremely complex thing to do, and a lot of companies are failing miserably at it. Then add to that a legion of customers who on a daily basis chant...

We want MORE for FREE and we want it FAST and we want GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE and we want NO DOWN TIME and we want you to APPRECIATE ME THE CUSTOMER

...and it becomes pretty difficult to retain employees with proprietary knowledge from moving to less stressful jobs. The good people behind the scenes (who are trying to please everyone) can be driven to drink.

The thing that has kept us going over the last 3 years is the 80% (like the humble Josef and David Lawrence) who go out of their way to support the cause. It allows us to put on a smile, work our 12-hour days, and realize that the bitterness expressed toward us is something we will never be able to escape.
