Japan PC Sales Rise 40% In Aug

TOKYO (Nikkei)-August personal-computer sales in Japan were up 40% on a unit basis from a year earlier thanks to strong demand from consumers, the Nippon Electric Big Stores Association reported Friday.

Sales also increased 29% in value terms. This was the first year-on-year gain exceeding 20% since March 1997, when there was a 43% jump as consumers sought to beat the April consumption-tax increase.

Peripheral sales in August rose 12% in yen terms from the same month last year.

The July 25 release of the Japanese version of Windows 98 sparked buying among consumers. Typically, the peak season for computer sales runs from the end of June through the first part of July. This year, however, consumers apparently waited for the new operating system, as did manufacturers offering new PC models, analysts say.

The release of the iMac by Apple Computer Inc. on Aug. 29 also boosted sales.

But business purchases, estimated to account for about 60-70% of all PC sales, remained low.
