<<LU needs to win in the carrier space (data, not voice) before they can even attempt to fight CSCO in the enterprise area. If LU falters in the area they know best (carriers), CSCO will takeover this space too. Buying ASND gives them the data networking edge (both technology, and customer list) they need to fend off the ever stretching CSCO. And the carriers area is where everyone sees the major growth over the next few years.>>

This makes the most sense, but LU's track record so far is smaller companies that they meld in, and some of these buys are questionable - Yuri systems for $1B? - then ASND should be worth $70 a share. LU should buy ASND or another big player, however they're headed for 20 different sets of interfaces, product divisions, etc. Tough to be a true networker with this type of lack of integration with what is headed for a cludged together product portfolio. ASND could change this for them, but then LU just wasted $1B cash on Yurie.
