I got this from yahoo. Vantive Shares Rise on Optimism for Third-Quarter Results Bloomberg News October 2, 1998, 4:49 p.m. PT Vantive Shares Rise on Optimism for Third-Quarter Results Santa Clara, California, Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Vantive Corp., a maker of customer-service software, soared 29 percent on investor optimism for third-quarter earnings. Vantive, based in Santa Clara, California, rose 1 29/32 to 8 17/32 in trading of 901,500, almost double the three-month daily average. The software maker's shares have lost almost half their value In the past three months. The company's earnings fell short of analysts' forecasts for the second quarter, and its shares have been dropping amid speculation that licensing sales of its so-called front-office automation software would be hurt by increased competition. Now, investors may be betting on improved performance in the third quarter, analysts said. ''The word on the street is that they may have made it through relatively intact,'' said BancBoston Robertson Stephens analyst Eric Upin, saying that most companies already have issued warnings if profit for the third quarter is expected to disappoint. Upin said he expects Vantive to have third-quarter earnings of 5 cents a share on revenue of $39.3 million. The company had a loss of $17.4 million, or 71 cents a share, on revenue of $31.1 million in the year-earlier quarter. Vantive's software helps companies speed sales, call-center, help-desk and field-service operations. The company is expected to earn 4 cents a share, based on the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call Corp. --John Lyons in the San Francisco newsroom (415) 743-3519/jac Quan Nguyen
