I think that $177 is the PII price at the time of the Katmai launch.

From the price differential between the Pentium 400 and 450 at the time of the Katmai launch, Intel expects that AMD will have a product that competes with the PII 400, but not the PII 450, in Q1. This is in line with AMD's road map, and is confirmed with Intel's pricing schedule.
