No doubt. I can't imagine it myself. In the same Quranic passages where it sets the criteria for obtaining multiple wives, it states that you're not likely to be able to pull it off with equal treatment of each in the process; and if you can't be assured of treating them equitably, then stick with one. The conditions for the multiple wife scenario are fair to the women, and in consideration of women who would be in trouble if not brought into such a house hold. Historically women couldn't be property holders or engage in legitemate business and keep there modesty in tact. So a source of protection for unmarried women, was marriage. I know I'll hear from the feminists for that, but I didn't make history. All my friends are Muslims. I don't know where wallstreeter hangs, but I don't personally know any that have multiple wives or anyone who knows someone else with multiple wives. I know it does go on, and I believe there are abuses just like with everything else. It seems like this issue gets too much attention, because people don't deal with the doctrines and whether or not they seem sensible. Everybody wants to focus on the behavior of the human beings (Muslims). I agree it often falls short of perfection.
