I think you're on the money with your link to database pricing pressure. Most companies I deal with have got used to Microsoft's business model, where the software costs a few hundred bucks, but there is NO useful support (MSFT support in Australia is a joke) and you have to pay another few hundred bucks for an upgrade every year.

When people see the ObjectStore pricing structure (which I believe is broadly similar to the Oracle pricing structure), they nearly have a heart atttack. People focus on the initial cost, not the total lifecycle cost.

One other thing: I think this "october phobia" in financial markets is getting out of hand. Remember October last year when everyone got into a lather about October '87?

At this rate, the "October effect" will soon feature more prominently in finance textbooks than the "January effect".
