<< People acting in a sense of absolute religious certainty, outside of the complications of secular compromise, have committed some really awful attrocities>>

When you make these types of statements, there is an implication that non-religious people don't do the same things. That, of course, is a fallacy. If you take out the reference to religion, you would have a very valid point - people acting in a sense of absolute certainty have committed some really awful atrocities. Just look at what is happening in the former Yugoslavia. Better yet, look at Stalin or Mao Tse Tung. If you don't think that's enough, look at the treatment of the American Indians by the European settlers. How about the Weathermen in the 60's.

Anytime someone believes that the ends justify the means, you leave yourself open to abuse. Clinton made a statement regarding fundraising that should have made many people nervous - something about anything being allowable in order to stop the Republican juggernaut. When you are that convinced that you are in the right, how will you know when it's time to put the brakes on, especially when people that agree with your goals are willing to support you no matter what you do.

Back on topic - I completely agree that the activist element of the RR was getting out of hand, and that only the public outcry and the severe punishment put on them by the courts brought them back under any semblance of control.
