Bateman,

A big difference between US and Japan is consumer spending. The Japanese people save and hoard their $ but the the American people spend $ they don't even have. So as rates go lower, the home refinancings are skyrocketing again, so those who are refinancing will feel rich, and spend some more. And even those who don't own a home can go out and buy a new car for "less." Chrysler just reported phenomenal sales for this past Q, their best ever.

Since the US economy is based 2/3 on consumer spending, I don't think there is much chance we will hit a recession in at least the next 6 mos.
