Gary, I could not say it better myself. Cisco's frame relay business is bigger than all of Ascend. That says volumes for Cisco's success! Eric

You can place any OS on a PC - there's no fundamental "hooks" msft has that elminates this possibility - True on the surface. Microsoft has various programs knows as PC-97, PC-98 etc. and manufacturers must adhere to these guidelines to be eligible for the Designed for Microsoft sticker on their box. Some of these guidelines call for the elimination of features used by various competing OSs. In some cases the guides could be interpreted as an improvement, such as the elimination of ISA interfaces, but non the less force any competing operating system to keep changing to run on the hardware thereby reducing their claims to stability or other advantages. Many machines will no longer activate the periferals in the machine, allowing or forcing the operating system to do so. Again Microsoft is well prepared to provide this support while a smaller company must struggle for access to the basic hardware instead of concentrating of features. Lastly there is the programs of various Win-gizmos, these are items such as modems, network cards, or DVD which do not operate by themselves but must have additional software provided by the operating system. It is difficult to the point of imposible to get data on what must be loaded except for Microsoft. Again this is in the standard pc arena. All the OSs are permitted to use proprietary hardware. TP
