The IMF and Year 2000 Issues

he Year 2000 bug, however, can affect the day-to-day operations of the
IMF if outside systems--for example in member countries or other
international organizations--that provide data to the IMF are not compliant
with Y2K. Further, there is a risk that key systems in member countries,
which are not ready for the year 2000, could affect the implementation of
macroeconomic policies directly (for example, government procurement, tax
collections, and the functioning of financial institutions and the payments
system).

General aspects of potential problem solutions
A first step is to identify and correct year 2000-relevant software and hardware elements. Subsequent
testing is not only the most time-consuming task, it is also the most critical in terms of time. It is not
enough to demonstrate the functioning of each individual system and each component, but it must be
guaranteed that various interlinked systems within and outside the organization are able to interact
correctly. The selection and use of automated tools in the various phases is important, but the attainable
savings will probably not amount to more than 30% of the overall costs. Although global estimates of the
costs of the century date change should be handled with caution, the Gartner Group's estimate of a total
cost of the date change of US$300 to US$600 billion at least gives a rough approximation.
