The article contained the following paragraph on the firing:

Before long, though, Appleton had his own run-in with the board, which unanimously fired him on Jan. 18, 1996, and gave the CEO position to Chief Technology Officer Tyler Lowrey, who some board members initially had favored for the job. Lowrey, then 42, was a genius at squeezing costs out of a DRAM production line, but he reportedly was neither very interested nor suited for the job of running the entire company. Eight days later Lowrey persuaded the board to rehire Appleton as CEO. Appleton's return was aided by some 20 executives who threatened to resign unless the board rehired him and promised to stop its frequent meddling in company operations.
