I recommend for your attention an article in THE ECONOMIST issue of September 26th, entitled "MCI Worldcom, Target Practice", in which the journal speculates on "Who's next?"

Here is an excerpt from the article with particular relevance to this thread--

"Using its own networks, WorlCom can offer a complete package of voice and data services in 17 countries. With a single point of contact, the firm can give business customers what it calls 'local-to-global-to-local ' service. The only gap is the lack of any wireless service. Hence the speculation that Mr. Ebbers' next acquisition could be AirTouch, America's biggest mobile operator, a snippet at around $40 billion."

The article goes on to note that WorldCom stock has escaped the recent turmoil and at 51, is only a shade below its high, with a 12 months price target of $70. It can manage the acquisition of another $40 billion catch like it did MCI.

Is it likely? Does WorldCom covet a wireless-service provider like ATI? IMO, the market indicates not. The recent price of ATI is considerably below its high, which tells me that Wall Street doesn't believe an acquision of ATI is imminent.

I'd welcome the opinion of others.
