I've been wading through the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, and my impression is that what really happens is that the amoral advantage seekers use ideology to get what they want. No doubt that happens. And people who do not THINK of themselves as amoral advantage seekers also use ideology to get what THEY want. Claiming they are only serving the demands of morality all along, of course. Such as many of those seeking to use this scandal to try to oust the President. For essentially minor offenses. Doug
