I think you just hit it the nail on the head. AMD has a deal with Compaq. Compaq will be first out there with K7 servers. Compaq wins by differentiating from the Dell's of this world. They also win by offering an upgrade path to alpha from a x86 server. AMD wins because they can take advantge of the ALpha SMP, Server, Board design expertise. AMD really only has to worry about getting the K7 out and a server infrastructure is already debugged for them. If the K7 is much higher performance than the Intel x86 CPU's Compaq will drive that price performance advantage right thru Dell's heart. And you better believe it that Dell will be at the end of the queue for K7 shipments behind Compaq, IBM and HP. The reverse will happen when Merced comes out. If it is a killer chip then HP will have a major leg up on it's competition for the same reasons in a couple of years. It seems to me that HP has positioned itself very well with feet on both camps.
