After analyzing Clinton's conflicting public comments, Komp said she thinks
Clinton is ''more uncomfortable telling the truth than when he is lying.''

In new book, Yale doctor examines
why people lie

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) A Yale University professor believes she knows
why people like President Clinton lie, and she is fessing up in a new book.

In ''The Anatomy of a Lie: The Truth About Lies and Why Good People Tell
Them,'' Professor Diane M. Komp of the Yale School of Medicine says people
actually lie quite often to protect themselves from punishment or
embarrassment, to protect their own fantasies about themselves or to protect
others....

....Komp questions Clinton's claims of privacy in his relationship with Lewinsky,
saying lies affect other people.

''I happened to have voted for him, but I happen to be hoping that he will resign
because I think his ego is running ahead of national interests and international
interests,'' she said.

After analyzing Clinton's conflicting public comments, Komp said she thinks
Clinton is ''more uncomfortable telling the truth than when he is lying.''

''When Clinton wagged his finger and said 'I did not have an improper
relationship with that woman,' the way his body language and words worked
together suggested that he was telling the truth,'' Komp said.

''But in his Aug. 17 speech, when he revealed the truth, ... he couldn't keep eye
contact. He couldn't sit still.''......
