Michael, the fact that not everyone is able to work the same number of years in their lifetimes is not necessarily an argument for 401K plans. In fact, it is more of an argument for some kind of basic safety net for the unfortunate, maybe something like Social Security retirement benefits, Medicare, and SSI long-term disability!!

We don't really know if 401K's are always a wonderful idea. Many of them are badly managed, and the return is not very good. There is often not much choice, and the choices are not aggressive enough. And if we go into a worldwide recession for a couple of years, anyone depending upon a 401K is going to be out of luck until their stocks recover, sometime in the distant future.
