PT, I think that Java in ads - as with Java on home pages - is at this point a very poor practice that risks alienating users. It's a guaranteed loser of eyeballs, and you won't catch top sites doing this.

It's too darn slow. Frankly, when I hit a page that has Java in it, I usually just move on to another site, and skip it.

Java does have it's place, and is here to stay. But I think that it's place right now is for highly-interactive web pages which can't be done any other way, which are used by motivated users who go to the page for a very specific purpose.

A couple of excellent examples of this are Datek's Streamer quote interface, and the Island book. ( At isld.com )

But ads and home pages ain't it, won't be it for a long time yet, and (more likely) may never be it.

Dynamic HTML (Javascript used in such a way that it dynamically alters the appearance of a page), on the other hand, is where it's at for casual interactivity. It IS appropriate to use Dynamic HTML for ads and home pages. It's fast and generally doesn't get in the way.

It's ironic that though Javascript is interpreted while Java is semi-compiled, that as a practical matter, Javascript is the speed demon for a wide class of applications. Java just has too much baggage that it carries around.

Yes, what little there is on the Zulu demo page is indeed Dynamic HTML. Damn if they didn't at least get SOMETHING right. :)
