Rick, if the common belief system in all societies is that there ARE deities, then my comment that "First, atheists by definition are people who have gone against the common belief systems in their societies" is absolutely true. Also, I would have to note that the ARCHAIC definitions of the word "atheist" in Webster's are degrading and morally quite judgmental and illogical. An atheist might argue, for example, that godliness is exactly what often leads to wickedness, like, for example, hundreds of thousands of women being burned as witches. Godliness certainly is not an inherently superior way of living, if you want to look at the whole thing logically.
