It has occurred to me that if Japan had consciously taken over the role of banker to the world, replacing both London and New York, by establishing the yen as the world trading currency backed by and convertible into large gold reserves, they could have shifted from being an exporting giant to a financial-center giant. A sort of cross between England and Switzerland.

I guess they did not have the economic sophistication to undertake this. Maybe, just as they mastered and then surpassed Western sophistication in technology (to the benefit of the whole world) the next generation of Japanese will go in for economics and finace in a big way. But they are sure messed up right now.
