So much has been said on this issue and its become highly divisive. Lines that seem clear on what constitutes impeachable behavior, have been rendered fuzzy because the delivered report by Starr deals with a perjury issue derived from a moral tresspass that isn't illegal. Its not what we expected to want to impeach a President for. Its not a crime of secret armies to overthrow the republic, nor is it a crime of political intrigue or assasination. Its a crime of passion stained dresses, secret meetings to discuss lipstick, jobs, girl talk being eavesdropped on by an independent council that seems to many, to have failed its original mandate and instead settled for a sex scandal. It stinks.. its not the substance of what most would want an impeachable offense to be. The fact is the President is the one that was elected by the people. Its the will of the people which gives validity to the Constitution, to Congress, to the Supreme Court, the Presidency and to the Senate. The people are not a mindless rabble. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. One can't in any way conceive that the founding fathers remotely wanted behavior like Clinton has done, yet I'm sure they wouldn't have written laws against it had the subject come up. There's no list of what's appropriate and legal behavior between consenting adults when doors are closed.. even White House doors. Yet having no laws against it doesn't excuse it either. Article III, Section 2, Clause 3 of the Constitution is interesting. It says.. "The Trial of all Crimes, except in Cases of Impeachment, shall be by Jury. I would interpret this as meaning impeachment of a President is acknowledged to be a political process, and political process is an expression of the will of the people through their elected representatives. I will take a long view of this and say that the office of the Presidency is larger and stronger than one man's actions. We've had over 200 years of colorful individuals occuping that position and they'll no doubt be others who will find new ways to degrade themselves during their term. Though some would agrue otherwise or if at this point it even matters, I doubt if President Clinton will have any more sexual escapades. If anything I would assume he's on a good behavior, good deed binge, trying to do what's good for the country.. there's not much time to make a legacy. Its a gross understatement to say the honeymoon's over... when there's a funeral song playing over the hill.
