Rick,
As far as I know, the Buddha did not talk about God. Personally, I think there are a lot of Buddhists who either do not believe in God or do not understand what is meant when you talk about God, but I could be wrong. I think Western Buddhists are not representative of the majority of Asian Buddhists.

I am confident atheists can begin to climb the staircase of spiritual meditation, but believe it would be dangerous to their belief system to go too high--for the higher experiences would shatter their conception of a Godless reality.

What about Christians? Don't you think many Christians would have shattered conceptions of God as they climbed the staircase of spiritual meditation?

Do you believe a meditator could experience Nirvana and remain atheist?

Yes, I think this is possible.

Rick, this is really all about definitions of God. Atheists who believe in Buddhism can rightly interpret GOOD as the highest ideal, and see everything spiritual happening within the individual, not from without. Is that Godly? Maybe. Does it matter? Not to me. Why cannot God and Good by synonymous? No atheist would have a problem if that were always the case.
